Cedars are swollen, grass is greening and amphibians are on the move with the rains. Spring is very near.   Thursday, March 27 View Page This is my first year since 2018 that I am growing with amendments, laying out and burying vines etc. Past few years I just planted and let everything grow in a huge mess (mostly field Pumpkins). Kids are getting older and time is opening up after a 7 yr layoff. We lost a few huge Shingle Oaks, and I should get more light than the 2pm cutoff I fought years ago. Redbuds watching the progress and Spring Peepers calling in the background.   Wednesday, April 9 View Page Back in the depths of a storage room are the newly germinated plants from this morning. Will have them in the patch mid to late next week.   Saturday, April 19 View Page Day 10 for the 1965 Casper, 2018 Hazeltine and the 2225 Wolf. Patch is ready to go, but the copious amounts of rain need to stop. Side note: Doug English stopped by a few days ago and brought some mill fabric and requested giant sunflower seeds. Always good to talk to a world class grower with tons of knowledge. He's one of those guys that knows every element of gardening.   Saturday, April 26 View Page Burning Honeysuckles watching the plants start to root (day 6 in the ground). Will be out of the small cold frames in less than 10 days and on their own. Cold frames only purpose now is to keep falling sticks and spring tree debris off the plants.   Wednesday, June 4 View Page Pollinated a 5 lober in the rain on the 2018 Hazeltine with the 1965 about 12 feet out. The 2018 is doing well, but the 1965 had hail cut the main vine in half. I cut back to the closest secondary and it is the new main. It's starting to catch up. Leaves on both plants all have holes after 2 hail storms in 6 days. One was from a tornado that killed 5 people 15 miles from me. It's just pumpkins, and I am very fortunate.   Monday, June 16 View Page Anyone see lobes like this? I've never had them pressed forward, they usually lean back where you can see the middle section (forms a bowl). How many lobes would this be?   Friday, June 20 View Page Can anyone tell me why seeds in the blossom are bad? Is this growable even though it's otherwise symmetrical? Never had this and my only shot on the main on the 1965. Thanks!   Friday, June 20 View Page 2018 Hazeltine Dap 4 looking solid. I'm headed to Mexico next week and plants will be limited to any care. We are also well above 105 F heat indexes in Missouri. Here's to hoping.
